Press registration opened Sept. 26, and many have already secured their Show badge. Among the registrants is Darron McDougal, a freelance writer who has attended the ATA Show as press since he became a full-time communicator in January 2013.
“There’s a lot of value in participation,” he said. “I suggest people go to the ATA Show to be integrated into our industry, for one thing, and to make relationships and connections. It also helps you stay on top of all the new products and technologies because those change a lot. The Show is valuable, and it is a relevant piece for most media.”

Like many outdoor communicators, McDougal attends the ATA Show for these top reasons:
1. See new products and physically examine products in person.
“I can look at a press release and product photos online and regurgitate what’s available, but nothing tells the full story until you get your hands on it,” McDougal said. Handling bows and equipment at the Show helps him write authentic, genuine stories based on real-world evaluations.
2. Identify and meet with company PR and marketing reps face to face.
“There are instances when manufacturers don’t have downloadable media assets on their websites, and it’s unclear who handles that,” he said. “At the Show, I can visit the booth to ask who does the PR and marketing. It’s great to connect with in-house marketing people for manufacturers and people associated with the PR agencies.” The Show allows McDougal to make connections that streamline communications throughout the year.
3. Stay up to date on industry trends and happenings.
“If you walk into the archery shop every once in a while, you’re not getting a full perspective of what the industry is doing technology-wise or otherwise,” he said. Because the Show brings hundreds of manufacturers and their products under one roof, press and attendees get a bird’s-eye view of everything the industry offers, helping them stay in the know.
4. Connect with friends and have a good time.
The ATA Show is the largest celebration of archery and bowhunting. People gather to bond, laugh, share stories, have a good time and renew their spirit for the year ahead. McDougal said he always enjoys himself at the annual event, and attending helps keep the industry united.

- Media and Press Welcome to Attend All Three Show Days
ATA members want to see you all three days of the ATA Show, Jan. 11-13, in St. Louis. Join your peers on the Show Floor when it opens at 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 11.
1. Schedule meetings if that’s an option.
It’s frustrating to walk across the Show to connect with a specific person only to find them tied up in conversation. Not all companies take meetings, but if they do, get on their calendar to reserve some one-on-one time.
2. Take breaks.
The ATA Show is big, and the days are long. There are a lot of people to meet, events to attend and conversations to have, so after a while, it wears on you. McDougal said it can feel more tiring than chasing elk several miles in the mountains. He suggests breaking up the day by grabbing lunch or getting fresh air. The break helps you chill out and regroup before making your next move.
